Single-front medium-voltage switchgear 10 kV KSO-298

The single-front metal-enclosed switchgear series KSO-298 (6–10 kV) is intended for the reception, distribution, and switching of three-phase 50 Hz AC in systems with isolated, effectively earthed, or solidly earthed neutrals. The cubicles are used in indoor MV switchrooms of package transformer substations (PTS), at industrial and power-plant substations, on municipal infrastructure and commercial sites. The design suits both permanent switchrooms and factory-built modular blocks, enabling short supervision/commissioning time on site.

Purpose and application

KSO-298 forms incomer, bus-section, and feeder bays in medium-voltage lineups. Typical tasks: connection of 6–10 kV power transformers; switching of cable/overhead lines; busbar sectionalizing with automatic transfer (ATS); auxiliary services supply; revenue/technical metering; telemetry to SCADA/DCS. Transition panels and unified interfaces simplify retrofit into existing rooms without long outages.

Service conditions

Baseline environmental classification - EN/IEC 60721-3-3 for stationary use at weather-protected locations (indoor). The enclosure degree of protection is IP20 per IEC 60529, protecting personnel from access to hazardous live parts and the equipment from large solids; local IP upgrades for selected zones are available subject to thermal checks. Where required, variants for other climatic regions can be engineered, with altitude corrections to clearances and test levels per general MV switchgear rules.

Layout and design solutions

Two enclosure concepts are available: (a) a welded structural-steel frame with powder-polymer coating for high mechanical rigidity; (b) a bolted sheet-steel construction with Aluzinc/galvanized panels on non-welded fasteners for rapid assembly and easy service. The cubicle is divided into functional compartments: the apparatus compartment (circuit-breaker, disconnector/earthing switch), busbar compartment (main busbars), cable compartment (entries, terminations, CTs), and a low-voltage compartment (protection/automation IEDs, metering, terminal boards). Viewing windows on the front allow checking device positions; a service light and a socket for a portable lamp are provided.

For measuring circuits we recommend instrument transformers to the IEC 61869 series (Parts 2 and 3 for CTs and VTs), ensuring correct accuracy classes, overload/short-time capability, and compatibility with modern protection IEDs.

Safety and interlocking

KSO-298 implements coordinated mechanical interlocks that prevent hazardous operations: blocking operation of the disconnector with the breaker closed; blocking closing of the earthing switch with the disconnector closed; blocking closing of the disconnector onto an earthed circuit; blocking door opening unless the feeder is earthed. All breaker operations are performed with the HV door closed, reducing operator risk. Sequences, endurance of operating mechanisms, insulation distances and type-test sets follow the general requirements of IEC 62271-1 together with product parts IEC 62271-100 (AC circuit-breakers) and IEC 62271-102 (disconnectors and earthing switches). For higher safety requirements, internal-arc-classified designs (IAC) to IEC 62271-200 with accessibility/direction codes (e.g., IAC AFLR 20 kA 1 s) are available, with pressure-relief paths to discharge hot gases into safe areas.

Variants and options

The KSO-298 range covers incomers, bus-sections (with breaker or disconnector), outgoing feeders, VT/CT, metering, auxiliary-services, and bus-coupler bays. Options include:
- vacuum circuit-breakers meeting IEC 62271-100 switching-duty requirements;
- manual and motor operators, fixed or withdrawable arrangements;
- modern microprocessor protection IEDs (differential, directional, autoreclose/ATS) and disturbance recorders;
- digital integration per IEC 61850 (MMS/GOOSE/SMV), incl. routable profiles (R-GOOSE/R-SV) for distributed architectures;
- enhanced anti-corrosion systems, thermal insulation/heaters, arc-flash sensors, partial-discharge monitoring, temperature sensing on cable lugs and busbars;
- seismic design, extended spare-parts kits, and standardized bus links.

Typical configurations

For 6–10 kV lineups, typical KSO-298 schemes include:
1) Incomer - transformer or HV line connection with metering and ATS;
2) Bus-section - bus splitting for maintenance and fault-ride-through;
3) Feeder - outgoing cable/overhead feeders with full protection and current/voltage diagnostics;
4) VT/CT panel - supply of measuring circuits, energy metering and condition monitoring;
5) Auxiliary services - control-power and switchroom life-support systems;
6) Bus coupler - inter-section links for flexible network topology.

On request, KSO-298 is supplied with IEC 61850-enabled IEDs: logical-node data models, MMS for station-bus services, and GOOSE/SMV for high-speed protection and measurement messaging on the process bus. This reduces copper wiring, raises observability, and simplifies modernization.

Operation and maintenance

The “operate-with-door-closed” principle minimizes operator risk and speeds routine switching. Modular, unified assemblies simplify spares logistics and expedite restoration after faults. Where required, arc-flash protection, temperature sensors on cable lugs and busbars, and maintenance plans based on breaker duty statistics and digital disturbance records are applied.

Single-front medium-voltage switchgear 10 kV KSO-285

The single-front metal-enclosed switchgear KSO-285 for 6–10 kV systems is intended for reception, distribution, and protection of three-phase 50 Hz AC in networks with isolated or earthed neutral. The equipment is installed in indoor MV switchgear lineups of package transformer substations (PTS), at industrial and power-plant substations, on municipal and infrastructure sites, and in factory-built modular indoor switchrooms. The baseline operating concept is “door-closed operation” of the primary device, combined with comprehensive interlocking and service convenience that does not require advanced operator skills.

Purpose and application

KSO-285 cubicles serve as incomer, bus-section and feeder units in medium-voltage distribution. Typical applications include: intake and distribution from 6–10 kV power transformers; connection of cable and overhead lines; busbar sectionalizing and automatic transfer (ATS); auxiliary services supply; connection of voltage transformers (VTs), measurement and protection circuits. Unified interfaces for switching devices and instrument transformers (CTs/VTs) allow easy project-specific adaptation and integration into existing lineups during refurbishment. Applicable requirements for normal service conditions, dielectric tests, internal-arc behavior and construction follow the IEC 62271 series for MV switchgear.

Service conditions

Standard environmental classification and location type - EN/IEC 60721-3-3 (stationary use at weather-protected locations, i.e. indoor). The enclosure degree of protection is IP20 per IEC 60529, providing protection against access to hazardous live parts and ingress of large solid objects; the selection of higher local IP ratings by zones is performed as required by the standard and thermal checks. For high-altitude installations, derating and clearance adjustments follow IEC 62271-1 and are reflected in insulation design and verification tests.

Layout and construction

Two enclosure concepts are available: (1) a welded structural-steel frame with powder-polymer coating; (2) a bolted sheet-steel enclosure with Aluzinc/galvanized panels on non-welded fasteners. Inside the cubicle are the vacuum circuit-breaker (or alternative on request), disconnector/earthing switch, current and voltage transformers, main busbars, protection & control IEDs, and terminal blocks of secondary circuits. Front viewing windows enable visual status checks. A service light and outlet allow routine work while main and auxiliary circuits remain energized, subject to operating procedures.

Instrument transformer selection for KSO-285 follows the IEC 61869 series (superseding IEC 60044) - notably Parts 2 and 3 for CTs and VTs - ensuring correct accuracy classes, thermal/dynamic withstand, magnetization behavior and compatibility with protection devices.

Safety and interlocking

KSO-285 implements coordinated mechanical interlocks to prevent hazardous actions: blocking operation of the disconnector with the breaker closed; blocking closing of the earthing switch with the disconnector closed; blocking closing of the disconnector onto an earthed circuit; and blocking door opening unless the circuit is earthed. Core requirements for switching devices and interlocking are defined by IEC 62271-1 and the product parts IEC 62271-100 (circuit-breakers) and IEC 62271-102 (disconnectors and earthing switches), including endurance, operating forces, clearances, and power-frequency/impulse withstand levels.

On request, cubicles can be supplied with Internal Arc Classification (IAC) to IEC 62271-200, with accessibility class A and directions F/L/R (e.g., IAC AFLR 20 kA 1 s). Pressure-relief paths discharge hot gases into a safe area or vent hood to minimize consequences of arc faults and direct the energy away from personnel.

Variants and options

Baseline KSO-285 variants include: incomers; bus-section units with breaker or disconnector; outgoing feeders; VT/CT panels; auxiliary-services panels; metering sections; and bus couplers between sections. Options:
- breaker choice (vacuum breaker to IEC 62271-100 switching-duty requirements; alternative types on agreement);
- manual or motor operators, withdrawable or fixed arrangements;
- microprocessor protection and automation terminals (differential, directional, auto-reclose/ATS), communications and IEC 61850 (MMS/GOOSE/SV) for SCADA/DCS integration;
- anti-corrosion systems, thermal insulation and heaters, seismic design, temperature & partial-discharge monitoring, arc-flash sensors;
- interfacing with other cabinet series (incl. KSO-2) via transition panels. IEC 61850 support ensures multi-vendor interoperability and fast exchange of operational data, events and oscillography.

Typical configurations

For standard 6–10 kV schemes the following configurations are typical:
1) Incomer - transformer/line connection with metering and ATS;
2) Bus-section - bus splitting for maintenance and system flexibility;
3) Feeder - outgoing lines with full protection and current/voltage diagnostics;
4) VT/CT panel - supply of measuring and protection circuits, energy metering;
5) Auxiliary services - supply of control power and life-support systems;
6) Bus coupler - inter-section bus links. Each configuration can be factory-pre-equipped with cable terminations, bus links and P&C interfaces to reduce site work.

Single-front medium-voltage switchgear 10 kV, type KSO-219

Single-front metal-enclosed switchgear 6–10 kV KSO-219 is intended for the reception, distribution and switching of three-phase 50 Hz AC power in networks with isolated, compensated or effectively earthed (grounded) neutral. KSO-219 belongs to the class of medium-voltage metal-enclosed switchgear designed for long service life, easy maintenance/retrofit, and safe operation of personnel without de-energizing adjacent feeders when standard interlocks and procedures are observed.

Typical applications of KSO-219:
- indoor switchgear (indoor substations) of package transformer substations (prefabricated substations);
- substations of industrial facilities and infrastructure sites;
- auxiliary switchgear of power plants;
- municipal utilities (water, district heating, urban infrastructure);
- distribution points, supply centers and sectioning nodes of urban and industrial networks;
and other power-supply installations.

KSO-219 panels can be installed both in permanent indoor substation buildings and in special factory-built, rapidly deployable modules. Distinctive features of KSO-219:
- two main enclosure concepts: (1) welded carbon-steel frame with polyester powder coating; (2) aluminium-zinc (galvanized) coated sheet-steel with riveted/bolted joints - for enhanced corrosion resistance and maintainability;
- closed-door operation for all circuit-breaker manipulations; front viewing windows provide visual status of the primary switching devices;
- mechanical and electrical interlocks eliminate hazardous operations (see the “Safety and interlocking” section);
- internal lighting in every panel; receptacles for portable lamps and a light switch are brought to the front; lamp replacement is allowed without de-energizing main and auxiliary circuits;
- docking with other KSO family panels (e.g., KSO-2) via transition panels, facilitating step-by-step modernization of existing switchgear.

Purpose and application

KSO-219 is used to build incoming, bus-section and feeder connections of 6–10 kV distribution networks, to supply power transformers, distribute energy over cable and overhead lines, connect reactive-power compensation banks, process drives and special loads. The cubicles provide integration of protection and control IEDs (instantaneous/time overcurrent, earth-fault, sensitive earth-fault, autoreclosing, automatic transfer, etc.), organization of commercial and/or technical metering, and dispatching (SCADA/DCS) via standard communication interfaces. Owing to its block-modular architecture, KSO-219 scales easily within indoor switchgear/packaged substations, supports section extensions, bus bridges and temporary bypass schemes for maintenance.

Service conditions

Base environmental category - EN/IEC 60721-3-3 (weather-protected stationary use indoors with natural ventilation in temperate climates). Default enclosure degree of protection - IP20 to IEC 60529 (protection against finger/tool access to hazardous parts and ingress of specified solid objects). Where required, individual panels/compartments can be supplied with higher degrees of protection (e.g., IP31/IP41) considering heat dissipation and convection.
Optional extensions cover a wider range of conditions: anti-condensation space heaters, temperature/humidity sensors, filter-fan units, corrosion-resistant versions, dust-/moisture-sealed cable entries, as well as vibration- and seismic-resistant solutions. Selection and application of degrees of protection follow IEC 60529 (IP Code); environmental categories follow EN/IEC 60721-3-3 (see Standards below).

Layout and construction

The internal layout of KSO-219 is based on functional segregation into compartments: low-voltage (relay), apparatus/withdrawable unit (depending on design - drawout circuit-breaker, load-break switch, disconnector, or switch-fuse combination), busbar and cable. Inter-compartment partitions, metal shutters and insulating screens prevent access to live parts when the apparatus is racked out. Contact systems are rated for the declared short-circuit thermal and dynamic stresses; primary busbars are copper or aluminium with cross-sections sized for the specified currents (see the “Technical data” table).

The relay compartment is segregated from primary circuits and houses protection IEDs, measuring instruments, telemetry modules, terminal blocks and DC auxiliary power sources. The cable compartment provides dedicated earthing (grounding) points, brackets for cable fixing and space for current/voltage transformers. The layout minimizes arc volumes, provides directed gas exhaust for abnormal conditions, and ensures easy access for routine maintenance.

Safety and interlocking

The safety concept combines mechanical and electrical interlocks that prevent incorrect operations and access to live parts:
- blocking of disconnector operations with the circuit-breaker closed;
- blocking of disconnector closing with the earthing (grounding) switch closed;
- blocking of earthing-switch closing with the disconnector closed;
- door interlocks (including blocking of door opening when the earthing switch is open);
- circuit-breaker operations permitted only with the panel door closed (closed-door operation);
- visual position indication of devices through viewing windows and mechanical indicators;
- electrical interlock circuits via limit switches, key-interlocks and shutter-position monitoring devices.

On request, panels can be supplied with internal arc classification (IAC) with accessibility class (A) and directions (F/L/R - front/side/rear) for specified current/time (e.g., IAC AFLR 20 kA 1 s). Requirements for internal arc protection and test methods are defined in IEC 62271-200 for AC metal-enclosed switchgear 1–52 kV.

The design of the cubicles is focused on high operational availability, personnel safety, and easy integration into existing lineups.

KSO-2U panels are used in:
- indoor MV switchgear of package transformer substations;
- substations of industrial plants;
- auxiliary services switchgear of power stations;
- municipal infrastructure nodes and distribution centers;
- distribution points and sectionalizing nodes of urban/industrial grids;
and other power-supply facilities.

KSO-2U can be installed both in permanent switchrooms and in rapidly deployed factory-built modules. Key construction features:
- enclosures are available in two versions: (1) welded steel frame with durable powder-polymer coating; (2) bolted sheet-steel enclosure with Aluzinc (or zinc) coated panels and non-welded fasteners;
- simple and safe operation enables maintenance by mid-level staff when procedures are followed;
- all breaker operations are performed with the door closed; front windows are provided to check the position of primary devices;
- each cubicle includes a lamp holder for internal lighting; a front-mounted light switch and service outlet for a portable lamp allow lamp replacement without de-energizing main and auxiliary circuits;
- KSO-2U can be interfaced with other KSO-2-type panels using transition panels, which simplifies modernization of existing lineups.

Purpose and application

KSO-2U is used to build incomer, bus-section and feeder bays, to connect power transformers, capacitor banks, process drives and external supply lines. The panels support protective relaying and automation functions (instantaneous/time-delay overcurrent, earth-fault/zero-sequence, neutral displacement, autoreclose, automatic transfer), revenue/technical metering, and remote control. Thanks to a modular base, cubicles are easily configured for the required schemes (single-bus, double-bus with sectionalizer, bypass bus system, bus tie/couplers and reserve incomers) and are scalable within switchrooms and package substations.

Service conditions

Standard environmental classification and location type - per EN/IEC 60721-3-3 (indoor, weather-protected locations). The base enclosure degree of protection is IP20, providing protection against access to hazardous parts and ingress of large solid objects; on request, selected compartments and facades can be supplied with higher protection (e.g., IP31/IP41) while maintaining thermal limits. Optional filters/louvers, anti-condensation heaters, temperature and humidity sensors, and micro-climate controllers are available. Versions with enhanced vibration/seismic resistance, anti-corrosion coatings for aggressive environments, and dust/water-protected cable glands and feed-throughs can be supplied.

Layout and construction

Each cubicle is split into functional compartments: low-voltage (relay), apparatus/withdrawable unit (depending on version - withdrawable vacuum circuit-breaker, load-break switch, disconnector or switch-fuse unit), busbar and cable compartments. Metallic partitions and shutters prevent access to live parts during truck withdrawal. Busbars are copper or aluminum with sections and hardware sized for declared short-time and peak withstands. The cable compartment provides convenient earthing points, cable cleats, extra shelves for CTs/VTs, and provisions for arc-flash sensors.

Primary devices include: medium-voltage vacuum circuit-breakers, disconnectors and earthing switches with independent operating mechanism, load-break switches, and combined switch-fuse units for transformer feeders. Instrument transformers (CTs/VTs) are selected to meet protection and metering accuracy classes. Protection IEDs, metering cabinets, RTUs and communication interfaces (Modbus RTU/TCP, IEC 60870-5-104, IEC 61850/GOOSE) are supported.

Safety and interlocking

KSO-2U implements a set of mechanical and electrical interlocks to prevent hazardous operations:
- blocking of disconnector operation with the breaker closed;
- blocking of disconnector closing with the earthing switch closed;
- blocking of earthing switch closing with the disconnector closed;
- door interlocks (no opening unless the circuit is earthed, etc.);
- breaker operation only with the door closed;
- viewing windows and mechanical position indicators of devices.

On request, panels can be supplied with internal arc classification (IAC) with accessibility class (A) and directions (F/L/R - front/side/rear) and with specified current/time ratings (e.g., IAC AFLR 20 kA 1 s). Pressure-relief paths discharge hot gases to a safe area or into a vent duct/hood. Type tests and IAC marking are agreed within the project scope and FAT/SAT programs.

Variants and options

  • Incomer/Reserve/Bus section - with vacuum circuit-breaker or disconnector, with optional ATS/AR, measurement and metering.
  • Outgoing feeder - withdrawable breaker, CTs/VTs, protection IED (overcurrent/earth-fault/neutral-displacement), telecontrol interfaces.
  • Transformer feeder - switch-fuse unit or breaker with relay protection; fast overcurrent protection and gR/aR current-limiting fuses are supported.
  • Measuring/metering cubicle - VT block, metering cabinet (including revenue metering) with AMI/AMR integration.

Operation, maintenance and lifecycle

The service strategy includes scheduled inspections, periodic torque checks of busbar joints, insulation condition checks and dielectric tests, verification of breaker performance, disconnector/earthing-switch drives, arc-sensor operation and pressure-relief paths. Based on diagnostics, risk maps and modernization plans are developed: migration to digital protection IEDs, online monitoring of heating and partial discharges, raising enclosure IP by zones, and refinement of cable entries. Retrofit kits are available (replacement of breakers and drives on withdrawable trucks without changing the enclosure), extending the lineup life without a full rebuild.
