KYN-61 Medium-Voltage Switchgear 35 kV

KYN-61 is a series of 35 kV medium-voltage switchgear panels engineered for transmission and plant distribution networks where reliable interruption of 20-31.5 kA short-circuit currents and system stability under all operating scenarios are required. Compared with 10 kV systems, this voltage level imposes stricter demands on phase clearances, lightning impulse withstand, and vibration resilience in oil & gas applications. The KYN-61 design addresses these factors: the primary circuit uses 40.5 kV vacuum circuit-breakers with a mechanical endurance of 30,000 cycles; the switching chamber is air-insulated with a slight overpressure of about 5 Pa; and the main busbars are mounted on epoxy-composite supports that maintain strength up to +120 °C.

Each panel features a four-compartment layout - busbar, withdrawable circuit-breaker, cable, and relay/control - separated by solid 2 mm steel partitions. Thanks to the cassette-type draw-out module, the “service → test” operation takes < 90 s with no covers removed. A shutter system made of glass-fiber-reinforced polyester reliably closes the primary receptacles when the breaker is withdrawn, preventing access to live parts. The inner face of the doors is coated with an anti-condensation finish that significantly reduces flashover risks due to moisture run-off during rapid temperature changes - a relevant measure for booster pump stations and well-pad substations.

The enclosure is designed for internal-arc verification to IAC AFL 31.5 kA / 1 s: pressure is relieved via rupture panels at the top of the cabinet, directing hot gases strictly upward without affecting adjacent low-voltage circuits. For sites in seismic areas, a reinforced variant with diagonal bracing and heavy-duty bolted joints is available, qualified for intensity 8 (MSK-64).

Digital readiness is implemented in the secondary compartment: the base configuration provides terminal blocks for RS-485 / CAN 2.0, and on request the panel is equipped with an LC-SX optical patch panel and a gateway supporting IEC 61850 Ed. 2. This enables advanced UFLS, arc-flash protection, and digital metering (M-Bus / DLMS) without rework. Primary equipment is protected against aggressive environments: exterior panels use a high-durability polyester powder coat; internal parts receive zinc-nickel plating with Cr(III) passivation, providing 720 h salt-spray resistance per ISO 9227.

Serviceability has been prioritized. A service trolley with adjustable table height and cassette locking is supplied as standard, simplifying handling of breakers up to 260 kg. The spare-parts kit includes quick-fit 35 kV heat-shrink cable terminations and spare shutter drives. By default, two-sided access is provided; where MV rooms are narrow, a front-access version with a reinforced pull-out cable tray is available. These measures ensure a high availability factor Kgt ≥ 0.998 and minimize downtime during scheduled maintenance.

Standards and type tests:

  • IEC 62271-200 (up to 52 kV) - type tests incl. IAC AFL 31.5 kA / 1 s;
  • IEC 62271-100 - 40.5 kV vacuum circuit-breakers, class M2 / E2 / C2;
  • IEC 62271-102 - earthing switches, up to 40 kA, mechanical endurance 5,000 ops;
  • IEC 60071-1 - insulation coordination: LI 170 kV / SI 95 kV (standard level);
  • EN/IEC 60721-3-3 - environmental conditions for stationary indoor use; typical temperature range -40...+40 °C (project-specific);
  • EN/IEC 60529 - degree of protection: base IP31, options IP41 / IP54.

Scope of use

KYN-61 covers the 35 kV segment where high breaking capacity, robust arc protection, and enhanced digital functionality are critical:

  • power-export nodes of 110/35 kV field substations in oil & gas;
  • bus-section and auxiliary switchgear at CCGT and hydropower plants;
  • switchgear rooms of compressor stations on trunk gas pipelines;
  • intermediate distribution points on long 35 kV overhead lines with capacitive-current compensation;
  • retrofit of legacy KSO-203/204, VK-10-35 cells migrating to vacuum switching.
